Paul Drake, MS, has been training and coaching heart rate and heart rate zone training methodology since 1991. Paul was an elite bicycling racer in both the US and Europe through the early and mid 90’s. Paul learned many of his heart rate training techniques from two major sources: the infamous Eddy “B”(Borysewicz), 1984 US Olympic Cycling Coach and the amazing Sally Edwards (US Triathlon Hall of Famer, founder of Fleet Feet Running Stores and author of dozens of books on endurance training). After his competitive cycling years Paul received a Master Degree in Exercise Science from Northeastern University in Chicago. Paul’s focus was very specific: Cardiovascular testing, conditioning and Cardio-fitness prescriptions. Soon after his degree, Paul started working as the team trainer and coach for the DePaul University’s Men’s and Women’s Cycling Teams. In six years of coaching Paul produced 5 regional champions (Mid-West Collegiate Conference), two state champion’s and one current National Champion (Master’s Division).
In 2011 Paul was invited to consult for Team USA: World Transplant Team. Working with heart transplant recipients Paul was able to produce astonishing cardiovascular results. Working closely an athlete’s cardiologist and understanding heart medication (Beta Blockers) effects, Paul was able to produce heart rate responses unseen in lab tests at the Minneapolis Mayo Clinic for this population. In 2013 Paul worked with the Team in Durban South Africa. Paul worked specifically with two athletes producing 1 gold medal and one silver medal in cycling and two golds in swimming. Paul is now the official assistant team manager and trainer for Team USA: World Transplant Team. Over the past several years Paul has received advanced certifications as an Exercise Specialist (ACSM- American Council of Sports Medicine) in VO2 Max Testing and Prescriptions. Paul is also a Certified EKG Tech through the National Healthcare Association focusing on heart rate diagnostics and recognition.
Paul is also a Certified level 5 Heart Zones Trainer and Educator, Certified Spin Instructor and Certified Yoga instructor. He currently works for Heart Zones, Inc. as an educator, trainer, ambassador and article writer focused on cardiovascular training and methodologies. Most recently, Paul has been contracted by the University of South Carolina ‘s Men’s and Woman’s Tennis Teams to test, asses and guide the teams in developing ‘off court’ training prescriptions and conditioning programs. The programs include recovery assessments and stressors which safety condition athletes in reaching maximum potential while staying injury free.
Paul is also finishing his first book on conditioning for peak performance.
Paul’s greatest highlight is bicycling across the United States 6 times for The Ability Experience’s Journey of Hope: National Service Project of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He has personally bicycled over 35,000 miles for children with disabilities.
For fun Paul likes to take really long bike rides, rock climb, snowboard, sing, tango dance, and throw the frisbee with his favorite surrogate dog Lucy!
